June Cold

Ughhhh!  How do I have another cold?  This is like the third cold I've had since we moved into the house.  I credit it to not taking my vitamins and vitamin D supplement regularly (I need to put them back out where I can see them even though I hate the clutter) and to my body finally relaxing after 8 months of stress of selling, moving, etc.  I had just gotten over my last rotten cold over Memorial Day weekend when I cut my finger.  That is pretty much all healed now (stitches out yesterday and I can just wear a regular band-aid now) and on Saturday morning I woke up with my throat getting irritated.  I felt so run down and bad yesterday I took a sick day.  I was already planning to leave early anyway to get my stitches out and to take the kids' registration materials to their new school, so I figured why drag myself in for 2/3 of a day?

I'm glad I did.  My mom did her usual with the kids and took Piper for the whole day so I got a few hours of rest.  I ran my errands and then made a dinner that I'd never have time to make the rest of the week and then went and got my stitches out.

I couldn't believe the way it down poured yesterday.  Incredible!  In between storms, we ended up going on a frog walk with our neighbors and their kids.  We had just started playing an all-family game of hide and seek when they came over.  I knew the kids needed to get out so we went out and found oodles of these little frogs that could fit on a dime.

I am feeling a little better this morning as the cold moved into my nose and out of my throat.  I felt pretty bad when I woke up but 3 ibuprofen and a Sudafed remedied that.  I think Bryce may have caught it from me though so it's only a matter of time before Piper gets it since she was all over me on Sunday.  They've given me enough colds over the years so I guess it's only fair.

Fever Continues

Piper continued to feel bad last night and woke up this morning with a 101.4 temperature.  Her main complaints are body aches, tiredness, and HUNGER.  Weird.  My mom and MIL both commented that it was like they couldn't fill her up.  No idea if the hunger is related or she's just having a growth spurt.

Hoping she can go to school tomorrow but we'll wait and see.  Also hoping it stays with just Piper!

Mini-Virus?

Piper woke up this morning and said her body hurt "all over!"  She was mostly acting normal but said her head hurt.  I gave her ibuprofen and my mom said she was fine the rest of the morning.  We guessed it was soreness from skating yesterday especially since it was a full body workout for her considering she was gripping my arm a lot and hanging.  Bryce said he felt sore too.  However, she got home from pre-k and said  she just wanted to snuggle up on the couch in a blanket and eat warm tomato soup.  Yes, it's colder then it should be in late April (I guess Mother Nature took my pleas a little too seriously about not getting too warm since we don't have our summer clothes.) but that's not my Piper.  She even told my mom she was too achy to eat her snack at school.

My mom took her temperature and it was 100.7 and then she went to sleep after having another dose of ibuprofen.

My mom said she's rebounded and has been eating a bunch but I'm not convinced that she's truly over whatever it was.  Kids get these weird sleepy, fever viruses from time to time so I'm wondering if that is what it is.  Of course, this isn't the greatest timing considering what is coming up this week.  But, I will take a sleepy fever virus over a stomach bug ANY DAY!!!

And poor Bryce, while he's not sick again, is in the midst of the oak pollen peak.  Thankfully, so far we've been able to keep his eyes from going totally flaming red but he'll have beginnings of his asthma cough and his eyes will start to itch and we'll treat him right away.  Hoping to avoid a short course of steroids again as the allergist was hopeful might be possible this year due to 6 months of allergy shots.  We'll see. Our new house should be pretty pollen free since it's been closed up but I had hoped to open it up and let the breezes blow through to get the new carpet smell (and whatever comes with them) out.  But that might not be the best option for the dude.

April has been a rough health month for the kiddos.  Livable but I'm ready for a warm, sick-free May.

Sunday Sickies

Laying in bed just having woken up on Sunday morning, I thought I heard a weird cough that almost sounded like someone was throwing up.  But there was no rapid movement associated with it so I didn't really think anything of it and that perhaps Bryce was doing one of weird asthma-like, allergy coughs.  Well, within a few minutes Bryce came in to tell us he had indeed thrown up.  He had woken up and gone and gotten in bed with my mom to snuggle (his favorite) and all of a sudden he felt the urge and managed to make it into her trash can and then continued into the toilet.  Thankfully no messes to clean up and that there was no undigested food in his gut......so while that's a small victory, I was wondering what made him throw up.  He said he felt okay now and I just hoped that maybe it was a random thing because he can't get ANOTHER stomach virus within a week of recovering from another one, right?

WRONG!

He went down and laid on the couch and within an hour was throwing up again.  Clearly whatever hit him hit him late in the night because his belly had time to digest dinner before getting sick.  This was NOT the case with the last virus and made it ever so much more disgusting.  He threw up every hour or so for most of the morning.  Poor kid had a terrible case of the dry heaves.  I wiped the tears from his eyes as he stood there.  Broke my heart.  And while I felt sad for him, I was RAGING inside.  Raging.  How can we have another stomach virus in our house?  Didn't we pay the piper for the last one?  The last one lasted 5 days in all the people who had yet.  Yes, I was spared but it resulted in missing 3 days of work and having very sick kids in a cramped living space.  I couldn't believe our "luck."

Bryce continued to lay on the couch and refused even ice chips.  I wasn't terribly worried since it seemed this stomach bug was only of the barfing variety and I knew his gut needed a rest.  He last threw up before noon and he slept off and on for a few hours complaining of boredom and feeling rotten.  Finally, after 3pm and lots of complaining about his head hurting (probably mild dehydration) we started putting pressure on him to eat ice chips to see if he could keep them down.  He did and we then moved onto some Coke and then onto Jello.  By dinner time he even ate half an English muffin and more Jello.

Whew, this seemed to be the "normal" stomach bug variety that is fairly short lived!!!  After having what we had last time, I could not have handled another lingering one.

But even though it was short lived, I've always said the worst part of the stomach bug (so long as your child recovers quickly and isn't horribly sick) is the suspense and dread that goes along with it.  How long will it last?  Who else will get it?  If someone else is going to get it WHEN will they get it?  As a parent that is a lot of limbo.  Especially living with my parents and having all 3 kids in the same room and in a bunk bed situation.

I told Jason last night as I was getting into bed that I feel like we did the best we could to to prevent the spread of it.  Caroline and Piper stayed away from Bryce and played outside most of the day.  Every time Bryce got sick, I wiped everything down with Hydrogen Peroxide Lysol wipes that are supposedly one of the best for stomach viruses.  And then my mom and I had a glass of red wine with lunch....read it might help prevent it in adults.  (Good reasoning, huh?)

But with all that stomach virus suspense in our heads, neither Jason or I slept very well last night.  Piper, who was overly tired from all of her outdoor activity, was a restless sleeper and kept talking/crying in her sleep.  She knocked on the wall to be covered back up (ugh!) and then kept making noises to keep the other two kids awake.  Of course that made Jason and I wonder if she was getting sick.  Every little noise had us going to check since finding her covered in vomit almost 2 weeks ago still has us a little uneasy.

I fell asleep sometime after midnight and Jason after 1am which is NOT good when you wake up around 4:30.  (I was lucky to sleep until 6am.)  Needless to say we are dragging today but hopeful neither girl will fall.  But they will both be sleeping with trash cans or barf buckets in their bed for the next few days.

Hoping the new house is stomach virus resistant.  As a parent you know stomach viruses are just par for the course and generally when you get over one you figure it will be a while before you are hit again. Here's hoping that means we'll get a long respite this time.  Is there such thing as stomach virus karma?  Because if so, we should be bullet proof for at least 2 years.

Over It

I think Piper is finally better.  She was still not herself yesterday and didn't go to school (she missed her Easter party, sniff sniff) but it was good that she was able to rest some more.  I suspected that she might be hitting her day 6 recovery when last night after dinner (which she barely touched) she ate 5 pieces of graham cracker with peanut butter and her personality seemed to be coming back.  Then this morning when I came up from getting a shower, she was sitting and watching TV and asked for more graham crackers with peanut butter.  She's had no appetite for a week so this is a big deal!  She scarfed those down and seemed more like Piper again.  Hopefully, she'll be rebounding more today with my MIL and this nice weather.

Speaking of which, I ran out last night and bought some short sleeved shirts from Kohl's for Jason and I to weather these next few warm days.  It really was so nice going outside yesterday evening to warmth and for it not to be chilly this morning.  Although it made me realize that Jason and I don't have light jackets to wear. HA!  Thankfully the kids each have a zip hoodie to wear.  Gosh, I miss my clothes.

I swung by the house last night when I was out and was hoping to see some progress outside (sod or finished porch pillars and rails) but no.  They've got a week and a half before our final walk through and I think they have given themselves ample time to get it all done.  I am still convinced we could have settled earlier this month.  It was nice driving through the new 'hood seeing so many people out washing cars, playing with kids and doing general outside things.  Can't wait to be one of them.  The kids bikes and scooters will definitely be coming over early in our moving process because it will give them something to do while we unpack.  I have a feeling they are going to be all over that neighborhood quickly.

As I was leaving (which I hate doing!), I stopped and said hello to a family that we met a while back that has two kids.  They asked when we settled and when I told them they asked when we were moving in and I said "THE NEXT DAY!"  For some reason that surprised them.  I guess not everyone moves in right away.  As much as I like the idea of painting before we move in, doing it ourselves would take too long and after all these months of waiting, we cannot wait one.more.day.

Oh and I am now trying to pick similar colors of Behr paint to paint our interiors.  I was originally looking at Sherwin Williams because we thought we were going to use that painter all of our neighbors had used and he was an SW guy.  But now since we're going to do a lot of it ourselves (at least the upstairs rooms) I am going through Behr colors.  We painted every single room in the old house with Behr and always had a great experience.  The one room we didn't use Behr for was a disaster, so since we know what has always worked for us,  I think we'll stick with it.  Behr doesn't have as great of a website though and their color app isn't compatible with my phone (um, it's a brand new phone....clearly their technology is behind).  But when Jason and I were at Home Depot the other night I raided their paint chips and I picked out the colors for the kids' rooms that were very similar to the ones they'd picked out from SW.  I'm still not sure about the downstairs colors but I think we'll wait to get a painter before deciding and not knowing what kind of paint they'll prefer to use (if any).

Virus From Hell

I need to first be thankful that so far this virus only claimed 3 people total - Bryce, Piper and mom. (Even after getting barf in my mouth I haven't gotten sick....yet.)  But it really has been a rough week and I am tired of being home with sick kids.  Maybe being in our own house would be a little better too.

Bryce continued barfing once a day and having random diarrhea through Friday. In fact on Friday he was so depleted from barely eating all week we were really getting worried and started trying to make him eat which he responded to by barfing. But that was the final time because he woke up on Saturday feeling like himself again.  Whew!

That left Piper who was still a mess. No throwing up since Friday but stomach pains and diarrhea have kept her miserable and couch ridden. I can't believe how much she has slept since she got sick on Wednesday night. And when she is having belly pains she is awful to deal with. I thought she was feeling better this morning because she wanted to eat and seemed perky but that quickly changed.  She is back on the couch, crabby but did just eat some noodle soup.

Jay and I got out last night for a date to Home Depot and Lowe's. Stopped by the house too which is my happy place right now. I am on the verge of counting the hours. We bought another table lamp and some really cool new glass pendant shades for the lights over the island since the builder ones are quite plain.  I am already planning for them to be one of the first things I install on settlement day. Personalization is a must!!!

Hoping to get out in the sun today before going back to work tomorrow. I am looking forward to the routine again as it will surely make the next two weeks go faster.

Sickety Sick Sick!

On Wednesday night at around 11pm just as I was going to sleep I heard Piper cry out in the next room.  I opened the door and was hit with the smell of vomit.  It was everywhere.  She hadn't made it to the bucket at the bottom of her bed.  Bryce was in the trundle to the side below her and was pissed that she woke him up.  I was so mad about his attitude.   Piper was covered in barf and was crying and could not be consoled. We were trying to strip her bed but Bryce was being difficult saying he wouldn't move.  After we got Piper's barf clothes off of her, my mom sat and cuddled her while Jason and I cleaned up.  We decided to put Bryce in bed with Jason, I slept in Piper's bed and Piper was going to sleep on the trundle for closest access to a barf bucket.  Caroline and my mom went down to sleep on the couch together.  Thank goodness they did because Piper was sick every 15-30 minutes until 6:30am.  It was a rough night.  After the first three times of barfing though, she finally started making it into the barf bucket.  (Of course after those first three times, she didn't have much in her stomach.)  Something about this particular virus is a bit violent.  It just kind of shoots out of you.  YUCK!!  She also started with diarrhea in the middle of the night but thankfully that was fairly short lived.

Jason stayed home (worked from home) and so did my mom but she was sick now too.  I felt okay but my stomach felt off which could have been from a lack of sleep or getting sick - I couldn't tell.  Piper had a few more vomiting incidents through the day but was able to keep some sips down.  Later in the evening though she woke up from a long nap, gulped some Gatorade and then sat on my lap.  All of a sudden she was spewing Gatorade everywhere.  EVERYWHERE.  Including directly in my face.  Did I mention some got in my mouth?  OMG.  All I could do was laugh.  Seriously.  This was happening.  I took Piper up for a bath (washed my face) and then got a shower myself while Jason cleaned up.  I'm glad it was just Gatorade.

Bryce still isn't himself either.  No appetite and when we had pancakes for dinner (it was all I could muster), he barely ate one and then was complaining of a stomachache.  He barfed again.  Since Monday (when he was truly sick) he has barfed once a day since then.  WTH?

So I am home from work again today (Jason went in) and hoping for only people getting better.  I thought maybe Caroline was getting sick but she woke up feeling fine.  My stomach doesn't feel right again but I still have no idea what that means.  Caroline has a birthday party tomorrow and I am hoping she will stay healthy because she is looking forward to it.  Poor kid has had a HORRIBLE spring break just sitting home with her sick siblings - I feel really bad about it.

Recovering

Bryce had a rough day.  More diarrhea and more throwing up.  In fact he last threw up last night around 7:30.  I was starting to worry it was going to last into the night but we got him into bed and he slept all night until 5am.  He came into bed with me complaining of a headache so I told him he needed to keep some Gatorade down before we could try giving him any medicine.  Thankfully he took a bunch of gulps of Gatorade and went back to sleep and woke up at 6am with me saying he felt better.  Whew.  Jason decided to stay home today since we weren't sure what his status would be and we didn't want to expose Jason's parents.  Bryce has had some toast and says his whole body feels better.  He was having a lot of stomach cramps yesterday and was just miserable.  And while I'm glad he's on the mend, now we sit and wait for the aftermath.  Will it spread?  If so, who is getting it and when?

Because of the way the kids are all sleeping in one room, Caroline and Piper would have no speedy way to get out of bed and make it to the bathroom.  In fact, if either one of them got sick in bed it would be a huge mess and would probably involve splattering barf on another kid in the room.  And if not that worse case, there is no way a middle of the night barfing incident would NOT wake up the other kids in the room like we were able to avoid when Bryce was sick since he sleeps on the trundle.  So with that in mind, both girls now have buckets and towels at the foot of their bed.  I am not messing around here.  Caroline's bed is hard to change in the middle of the day, let alone the middle of the night with barf on it.

Maybe my precautions will mean that neither of them get sick.  Let's hope so.  But I am keeping those buckets there for at least another week.  Incubation for stomach viruses are generally only a few days but since you never know what surfaces could be infected, I'm not thinking we're in the clear for a while yet.

I am back at work today and not feeling good myself although it's from the cold that Piper and Bryce are getting over and not a stomach virus. (Yet.)  It's kind of a lousy way for the kids to spend spring break.  Jason said the girls are bored.  I expected that.  It's not very warm out.  We really did expect to be in our house by spring break and didn't really plan for this week.  And since Jason and I are taking off a whole week at the end of April for moving, taking off now (planned vacation as opposed to sick time) is not happening.

Just like last week when I said to Jason that it was a good thing we weren't moving that week because of the snow and bad weather, I am saying the same thing about this week because of the sickness.

NOT April Fools

Bryce complained of a stomach ache last night at bedtime but based on how much candy he ingested yesterday, we figured that was all it was.  Well, the joke was on us because at 3:30am he walked into our room holding a trash can full of barf.  Fortunately a lot made it into that can but not all of it.  There was still quite a bit on the floor of his room.  And because all three kids are in that room, trying to clean it up without waking everyone was a feat.  And true to form, Bryce can't stop talking when he's upset about something.  Shh!!!!!

Thankfully, he only threw up 2 more times after that and has kept a Coke down but I can't say things are going well from the other end.  Thinking back, when the poor kid gets a stomach bug, he has never thrown up that often but has had long bouts of diarrhea that he does NOT handle well.  Even at 7 it really upsets him.  My mom's house does not smell very good today.  Thank goodness we can open windows.

My worst fear of living at my mom's has come true....the dreaded stomach virus.  3 kids, 1 room, and my parents.  I do not want them to get sick and of all weeks....spring break when the kids are all home.  I don't want my IL's to get exposed either.  Bryce was around everyone yesterday but thankfully he did not handle the twins because of his cold.   The kids were supposed to go to my IL's again on Wednesday night but I am already thinking of cancelling that plan since the kids have come down with stomach viruses there before and I do not want to infect their house.

I am already planning on putting a trash can on Piper and Caroline's bed for the next week since both of them do not have the ability to quickly get out of bed (C is on the top bunk and Piper has Bryce in the trundle right to the side of her).  Why do we always get stomach viruses in early spring?  WHY WHY WHY?  And while we rarely get a stomach bug that goes through all 5 of us, without fail, I am the one that always gets it.  No matter what.  Ew.

I feel like dead woman walking.....sweet.  At least we're not at Disney World or moving this week, right?

Little Sick

Caroline didn't go to school yesterday (her first missed day this year) because on Wednesday night she had a low grade fever, was flushed, said she felt weak and "weird."  She had had an irritated throat that had improved so I let her stay home to see what happened.  My MIL gave her more ibuprofen at lunch time when she started feeling bad again but mostly she was fine.  Last night I told her she could go to school today as long as she didn't have a fever and she didn't like hearing that very much.  This morning she woke up without any temperature elevation but I went ahead and gave her a preemptive dose of ibuprofen anyway.  She also seemed to be losing her voice a little and sounded more like she had a cold which I think Piper and I are fighting off too.  Poor kid.  I know things aren't perfect at school for her right now and when she's not feeling great she tends to exaggerate how "bad" it is.  I know she doesn't feel like she fits in a lot of the time but I also know she has several kids who DO like her and are the friendly type.  Of course this doesn't stop her from saying that "everybody thinks I'm weird and gross" or that "everyone thinks I'm a nerd."  When she starts talking like that I ask her about the kids she does like and if they think that about her and she says no.

I think a lot of this is developmental and she's entering that awkward phase of the pre-teen years.  I know that things in our new school will be different but until that happens she just has to keep her chin up and focus on the kids that are truly nice to her.  It's nothing terrible just a bunch of kids with bad attitudes and cliques.  The guidance counselor and teacher are well aware of some of the personality conflicts in the class and thankfully one of the more negative kids is moving soon.  I feel terrible that Caroline is not feeling totally accepted by her class but glad that our move to get them into a new school is already on the horizon because if it weren't this certainly would have been the impetus to start looking.  Whew!

Sick & Tired

I am so tired of feeling LOUSY.  Now on top of my pinkeye and irritated throat, I have a lot of drainage and my ears feel slightly clogged.  I keep thinking that this all points to something viral that antibiotics would not touch.  I haven't had a fever since Monday night either.  Bah.

I'm just run down and sick and tired of being sick and tired.  I'm tired of everyone at work looking at me like I have the plague and afraid to touch anything I've touched..  Jason has completely kicked this thing on his own (although he never felt as bad as I have).  We're supposed to go out to dinner on Saturday evening for a belated anniversary meal.  I had hoped that my eye would look better by then.  I really hate going out in public with my eye looking like this.  I'm so self conscious. If I feel like this tomorrow I will finally break down and call the doctor - I'm just not convinced there's anything he can do based on the fact that it's presenting more and more like a virus.  If it was just the sore throat I'd say maybe it is strep, but now with the congestion, I doubt. it.

A total pity party, I know.  But it's been a week now.  I think I'm allowed, right?

Plague Update

All three kids remain healthy, Jason's sore throat continues but he thinks it's improving.  I didn't wake up with a fever today but feel like perhaps I'm getting one again here sitting at my desk at work.  My eye looks no better so I'm not sure if I'll continue the drops or not.  Everyone at work looks at me as though I'm a walking infestation.  My throat is still moderately irritated too.  I just want this to go away and feel normal again.  Now the great debate is whether to take fever medicine before my next meeting or let it ride.  I just want to be sure I have a fever before I take anything because how am I supposed to know I don't have a fever anymore if I keep taking medicine.  Yeah, I know.  Weird sick logic.

12th Anniversary

We do anniversaries up right here in our house!  I started a fever with body aches, a sore throat and terrible headache on Saturday evening.  Didn't feel much better this morning but at least my pinkeye is starting to responded to the eye drops.  Needless to say, I wasn't feeling up to much of anything and Jason isn't feeling 100% either.

The good news is that all three kids are finally healthy.  Bryce hasn't had a fever since Saturday afternoon.  I talked to the doctor this morning and he's convinced we have some nasty virus in our house.  Even though the girls both tested positive for strep, it still took Piper 4 days to respond to the antibiotics and Bryce 5 days.  So if they did have strep, it was secondary to a virus.  My throat, while fairly irritated doesn't feel like strep at the moment.  (It could change.)  I just keep taking ibuprofen or Tylenol as soon as I start feeling feverish and achy again.  Dr. Q. said to call him in a day or two if I was worse or no better.  We'll see.

We ended up going to my mom's because the kids hadn't been able to swim in ages due to them all being sick plus my grandmother was down.  The kids swam all afternoon and I got to take a nap.  A real, bona fide nap!  No one woke me up and I slept for over an hour.  I really needed it but started feeling rotten again once my meds were wearing off.

I'm planning on going to work tomorrow.  I was off on Thursday/Friday as planned but probably wouldn't have gone to work with my nasty, contagious pinkeye so it was a great two days off and I really need to get to work and catch up.  I had a 10am meeting that I was supposed to be leading but I've just rescheduled that because I do NOT feel up to it.  I'm figuring I'll wake up, take some meds, get to work and do what I need to do before I start feeling feverish again.  I've got a good 10 or so grad students and faculty waiting to hear back from me on various different things....can't keep them waiting.

Thankfully, the kids are spending the night at my mom's so that's one less struggle for me.  Jason is feeling run down with an irritated throat but no fever yet.  Who wants to bet his starts up as soon as I get better?

At least we're getting this out of our system before the beach, right?  Happy Anniversary to us.  We know how to paint the town!

Goopy Eye

And our luck continues!  My eyes kind of felt dry all day yesterday and then when I woke up this morning my left eye was all crusty and my right eye was slightly crusty.  I got out of bed expecting to see a big old pink eye but nothing.  Normal coloring but a little swollen and droopy.  Gross.  I look weird.  Just perfect for family photos tonight at my BIL's wedding ceremony.  It will complement my new dress perfectly.   BAH!!!

Trying to decide what to do.  I put a call into my doctor.  It's just weird to me that it's not pink.  I read online too that viral pink eye (which Jason has had twice) generally only affects one eye while bacterial is more common in both eyes.  What to do, what to do?  Regardless, I highly doubt no matter what I do that my eye is going to look better this evening.  Now I know how poor Jason felt at high school graduation with a raging case of pink eye.  A momentous photo op looking like someone had just punched you in the eye.

Good News/Bad News

The Good News:  Piper saw Dr. Q yesterday and he believes she just needs a stronger antibiotic. (Apparently places like Minute Clinic and Patient First often don't prescribe a very strong antibiotic and while it works fine for some - Caroline - it doesn't for all.)  She has started on it and seems better already.  No fever since yesterday.  Whew!

The Bad News:  Bryce complained of his throat hurting last night before bed and woke up this morning with a sore throat, a 101.5 fever, and just threw up.  Jason left work to take him to the doctor's already.

The only thing I will say is that Bryce did say some kind of rude things about the girls both being sick last week and to say that maybe karma is biting him in the butt isn't far fetched - not that I want him to be sick but when you say "good" in response to one of your sisters being sick and then complain incessantly about the other one being sick you're asking for it.

This is one of those times when you realize the difference of having 3 kids versus less.  Normally, I don't even consider having three that hard but when something spreads through slowly, it's really hard and you feel like it won't end.  It's times like these I'm glad I don't have more!  I feel like we're starting the same pattern that we had in my family when I was a kid.  One kid gets strep and it spreads.  It didn't stop in my house until I had my tonsils out and then the strep mostly stopped.  (I was the infector!)  It's also hard when you have a younger one that is sick too.  Caroline and Bryce mostly keep to themselves when they're sick but Piper was laying all over me, drooling, and miserable.  It's one thing about them being little that is the hardest.  She's also the only one that still refuses medicine when she's not feeling well.

I am going to have Jason ask Dr. Q what he thinks Jason and I should do should one of us start with strep symptoms.  Does he want to see us or would he be willing to call in a prescription.  He's pretty good about that kind of stuff.  Normally, I wouldn't be overly concerned but given that my BIL is getting married on Thursday and having their reception on Saturday, this isn't exactly a good time for us to come down with strep.  I'm scheduled to be off on Thursday/Friday already but I don't want to spend it being sick.

And as usual when something is spreading through my kids I feel like maybe I'm getting it but can't tell if I'm really becoming symptomatic or I'm getting it.  When the kids have had stomach viruses I always feel a little queasy.  And in all the times one of them has had it, I've ended up with it.  And now since the girls were diagnosed with strep, my throat has been irritated off and on.  If I hadn't had strep last year, I wouldn't even consider that I'd get it since I hadn't had it since 1989 when I had my tonsils out but now I know I'm not immune.  Please don't let me get sick.  I was SO sick when I had it last year.

ETA @ Noon:  Bryce saw the doctor and while Dr. Q doesn't think it's full fledged strep yet, it's brewing and he went ahead and gave him the prescription.  I also had Jason ask what he wanted to do if either of us came down with it and he said just to call him and he would call in a prescription for us.  Whew!  So at least now I have the peace of mind that if I do get sick, I can just get the medicine quickly!  Thank you, Dr. Q.  Now to get Bryce on his antibiotics and get him healed!!

Antibiotic Fail?

Piper woke up at 5:22am yesterday and 6am this morning with raging fevers.  I had to keep her on meds all day yesterday to keep it down.  Are these antibiotics going to kick in???  Caroline hasn't had a fever since Friday night and is getting back to herself.  Piper is fine as long as her fever is under control.  Clearly if it's no better tomorrow we'll be headed back to the doctor.

This is VERY frustrating because when Piper has a fever, what is the last thing she wants to do?  Take medicine. Mind you, this is the child who thinks up aches and pains when she's well to get some chewable ibuprofen.  I'm running out of liquid ibuprofen and will need to get some more because she is refusing the chewables.  Oh and I think I know her pattern too, if she has a fever and an empty stomach she'll throw up.  She's done that three times now.  This morning she's yet to take any medicine - she's refusing.  She drank some Gatorade and a handful of blueberries and has kept those down but hasn't taken any meds yet.  Seriously, this is making me crazy.

ETA:  7pm - she has a 102.2 fever and this is within 2 hours of her having ibuprofen.  Gave her the Tylenol switch off.  If she wakes up with another fever tomorrow, we'll be seeing the doctor.  It's not helping that she's not drinking very much and barely eating either.  We're really pushing her now.  I just want my baby to get better!!!

Strep It Is

Ended up going to Minute Clinic because our doctor's office was closed today (figures) but I think it worked out better anyway.  It's really close, there was no line, and they do a rapid strep test there.  Both girls tested positive well before the timer was up.  I was kind of glad, to be honest.  Instant antibiotics, which is good because Piper was crashing.  Caroline seems okay but she's under the influence of ibuprofen.  Piper hadn't been able to keep any meds down so she had a fever and was miserable.  I stopped at Sonic on our way home and picked up slushies for everyone.  Piper wouldn't touch her's but I did manage to get a dose of liquid ibuprofen into her and then she fell asleep so I'm hopeful she'll be perking up soon and then I can give her the first dose of antibiotics.

Of course now I'm just waiting for Bryce and I to get it.  Having strep a year ago is kind of freaking me out because I was so sick.  At least if I do start with a sore throat or Bryce gets a fever we'll be high tailing it to Minute Clinic.  Thank goodness for that place - much less invasive than Patient First for simple things like strep and ear infections.

Hot "Fun" in the Summertime

Piper was up just after 6am this morning and the poor kid was so hot.  Burning up.  Thankfully she was in better spirits than last night and was willing to take some liquid ibuprofen. She sucked down a little cup of water too but when we got up to come downstairs it all came back up.  Sigh.  She's sipping on some Gatorade now and is actually kind of perky so we'll see.  Feeling bad I can't do anything to alleviate her fever.

Jason said Caroline got up at 5am saying she was thirsty (never happens) and he gave her some Gatorade but he didn't think to feel her head to see if she was warm.  (!?!?!)  So I'm just waiting for her to get up and we can assess about going to the doctor's today.

Not that I want to take sick kids out in 100 degree heat.  Guess I got what I asked for about not having to work today.  Yeah, "work."  Me thinks I'll be busier today than I was yesterday at work.

More Fever...

and sadly, the prescription is NOT more cowbell.

Piper's going down the tubes now too.  Complaining off and on about her throat.  Saying her body hurts and just being really tired.  Then, after a lot of crying and fussing, she threw up.

I'm taking off tomorrow and having them seen.  I'm not going into the weekend with 2 sick kids.  Caroline is relatively fine while medicated but has said her throat hurts a little bit.

So maybe strep?  If that's the case, I just wait for Bryce to get it and well, maybe me.  I had it last spring after not having it for 20 years so maybe that means I'm susceptible again.   Just in time for a high temperature of 104 on Saturday.  Maybe someone in my house will have a body temp of 104.  I hope not.

Fever on the 4th

On Tuesday evening, Caroline started acting weird.  We had pancakes for dinner (quick dinner before the dentist) and she didn't want to eat them.  Um yeah, weird. She also barely spoke a word to me to and from the dentist.  Also weird because she loves the chance to be with me without her siblings.  I chalked it up to her being in a mood about some other things.  Then yesterday morning she woke up and didn't want to eat breakfast, her favorite meal of the day.  My mom alarm went off!  She felt a little warm but not overly so but she said she felt weird - kind of dizzy and just not right.  I gave her ibuprofen and made her eat some breakfast since I wondered if she might be dehydrated which Caroline is apt to be since she barely drinks enough to keep a cat hydrated on a normal day.  Within the hour she started feeling better and I didn't think much more about it.

Then we went to my mom's to spend the day with family and friends.  She got right into the pool and everything was fine but around 2pm when Zoe and Taki arrived (who she LOVES), she started acting funny again.  She didn't want to get back into the pool and just was kind of sitting around.  I let her have a Coke and she perked up a little bit but before I knew it, Zoe came out to tell us that Caroline was laying down.  Caroline laying down?  That child is never tired (or at least claims to be).  I went right in and found her laying in one of my mom's guest rooms covered up.  Yep, fever.  I gave her ibuprofen and some Gatorade and she was asleep before I knew it.  I kind of expected her to sleep it off but when she woke up an hour or so later, she was still warm and said her body ached.  It had been almost 2 hours since I had given her the meds so I gave her Tylenol hoping it would help.  I guess it did because within a half hour she was outside and back in the pool.  My mom even coaxed her into eating some real food and she kept on swimming and was able to enjoy the rest of the evening.

Thanks to the 4th being on a Wednesday (whose idea was THAT?), Jay and I had to work today so we didn't stay very late.  After a short ground based fireworks show put on by my dad, we headed home shortly after 8pm.  Booo for an early 4th of July evening.  (Normally, I would have taken off Thursday/Friday but because I'm off next week on Thursday/Friday for my BIL's wedding, I didn't think I should take off this week.)  I gave Caroline another preventative dose of ibuprofen and followed it with more Tylenol two hours later.

She slept fine all night but was already up this morning when I got out of the shower and I figured it was probably because she had a fever again and wasn't feeling good.  I was right and found her downstairs huddled up on a chair with her nightgown down over her legs.  She was very warm and I quickly got some ibuprofen into her.  Piper woke up a short time later saying that her "body hurt" but didn't have a temp.  I gave her some meds and we'll see if she develops a fever or not later.

I'm not completely surprised by this random fever though. Caroline's BFF, Sophia, had a fever for several days last week too (C spent the night with her the day before she got sick) and I figured that making it this long without any symptoms meant we were in the clear, but I guess not.  Sophia's ended up turning into a double ear infection and then an early case strep - the doctor said it was just starting, so who knows where we'll end up.  Maybe I will end up being off tomorrow but not for any good reason.
